I used to work in a Christian bookstore. I loved it and my co-workers and I learned a LOT. However, my favorite things to peruse were all of the Bible marking tools (shocking, I know). One time, I found one of the most magnificent tools I’ve ever seen. It’s the Pentel 8-Color Pencil. Anyone who’s ever tried to highlight something in the Bible knows what a pain it is. You end up with bleed through on the following page due to the delicacy of the pages. The vast majority of highlighters in the world are liquid based, which is the problem for Bible pages. Some companies have figured this out and produce pencil highlighters. For example, the Eco Highlighter Pencils.

Why do I like the Pentel so much? I can carry eight colors in only one instrument, choose the colors I want, and not worry about bleed through or drying out. You can see here that there are more than eight colors available. There aren’t a million, but there are enough.

Why on earth would I need 8 colors? When I do serious Bible study (I wish I could say it’s often), I subscribe to the Inductive method. One part of that method (among others) is that you use different colors to represent different ideas or themes. You can make it what you want. For instance, I have chosen red to highlight things that have to do with relationships: God’s with us, us with Him, or us with each other. A passage like 1 Corinthians 13 would have a lot of red in it. This shows you visually that the theme is love. This pencil isn’t just for Bible study. It’s useful for many reading endeavors: reading groups, college studying, personal reading, etc.
